Raspberry Pi , the time of portable computers

Small as a credit card and intended to inspire a new generation of children to learn how to programme, the single-board computer launched on February 29 at the cost of £22 went sold out immediately forcing Raspberrypi.org to switch temporary to static site.

The hardware runs a Linux-based operative system and can be wired to a monitor, a keyboard and a mouse. It includes a slot for memory SD-card and a USB port and it is present also in a model B at £35 with an extra USB and an Ethernet port. An accessory pack will be available soon completed with box thought even  in a transparent version for learning purposes.

In the time of smartphones Raspberry Pi represents the first commercial success of an open source portable computer. The aim of the creators is have access, later in the year, to the educational market and this initial launch of a batch of 10000 items for "hobby enthusiasts" hopefully will help to build a community to improve ideas and support for a future adoption within schools.
